Responsibilities

  • Cost Estimation: Prepare detailed and accurate cost estimates for civil engineering and infrastructure projects, including components like earthworks, drainage systems, highways, structures, and utilities.
  • Analytical Review: Evaluate project drawings, specifications, and tender documents to produce comprehensive cost analyses.
  • Risk Assessment: Identify potential risks and opportunities within projects and develop strategies to address them.
  • Quantification & Take-Offs: Perform detailed take-offs from design drawings and models.
  • Vendor Engagement: Collaborate with suppliers, subcontractors, and internal teams to gather up-to-date pricing and technical information.
  • Tender Submission: Prepare and submit technical and financially competitive tender packages, including pricing schedules and supporting documentation.
  • Adjudication & Negotiation: Participate in tender adjudications, providing clear justifications for estimates, and support post-tender negotiations.
  • Market Analysis: Stay up to date with current industry trends, market rates, materials, and construction methodologies.
  • Value Engineering: Contribute to value engineering efforts to optimise project cost-effectiveness while maintaining quality standards.
  • Project Support: Assist delivery teams with cost tracking, forecasting, and financial reporting throughout project execution.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Civil Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • Experience: Proven experience as a Civil Estimator within the civil engineering or infrastructure sector.
  • Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of civil engineering techniques and construction methods, with specific expertise in areas such as earthworks, drainage, utilities, concrete structures, and highways.
  • Software Proficiency: Expertise in estimating tools and advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
  • Contract Knowledge: Familiarity with standard forms of contract like NEC, JCT, and ICE.
  • Skills:
    • Excellent analytical and numerical abilities.
    • Detail-oriented with strong problem-solving capabilities.
    • Proficient communicator and negotiator with excellent teamwork skills.
    • Skilled in managing time-sensitive projects in a fast-paced environment.

Day-to-Day

  • Evaluate incoming project plans and specifications to identify estimation requirements.
  • Collaborate with suppliers and subcontractors to ensure cost data is accurate and reliable.
  • Work closely with project managers to forecast costs and ensure alignment with budgets.
  • Prepare and review tender submissions, ensuring accuracy and competitive pricing.
  • Dive into cost breakdowns and risk assessments to provide clarity and add value during project planning.
  • Attend project meetings to support pricing justification and resolve estimation-related queries.
  • Continuous improvement of cost database, contributing to organisational efficiency.
  • Support the transition of tenders to active projects, ensuring proper handoff to delivery teams.
