Responsibilities
The successful Column & Boom Operative will perform a variety of tasks, including but not limited to:
- Operating column and boom welding machinery safely and in compliance with production requirements.
- Setting up and calibrating welding equipment prior to operations.
- Positioning and aligning steel components precisely for welding.
- Selecting and adjusting welding parameters to fit material thickness and job specifications.
- Carrying out welding operations, ensuring adherence to technical standards and specifications.
- Reading and interpreting engineering and fabrication drawings.
- Performing dimensional and alignment checks on components during and after assembly.
- Conducting visual inspections of welds, identifying defects, and ensuring that finished products meet quality requirements.
- Completing necessary production and quality documentation as required.
- Handling and positioning large/heavy components using appropriate lifting equipment and techniques.
- Supporting the production team in achieving daily, weekly, and project objectives.
- Maintaining a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
- Following all health, safety, and environmental procedures as well as promoting a culture of workplace safety.
Qualifications
Essential:
- Proven experience operating column and boom welding equipment.
- Strong understanding of welding and fabrication principles, including reading engineering drawings and understanding weld symbols.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to work with tight tolerances.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to both work independently and collaborate within a team.
- Commitment to workplace safety and the proper use of PPE and lifting/handling equipment.
Desirable:
- Relevant welding, fabrication, or engineering qualifications.
- Previous experience in industries such as heavy fabrication, structural steel, offshore, energy, or oil & gas.
- Familiarity with welding defects, their potential causes, and rectification procedures.
We welcome candidates with varied educational and experiential backgrounds. Practical experience in a similar capacity may be considered in lieu of formal qualifications.
Day-to-Day
A typical day as a Column & Boom Operative includes:
- Conducting pre-production equipment setup and component alignment for assigned projects.
- Performing welding operations on structural steel and other fabricated components with a focus on accuracy and quality.
- Collaborating with the production team to meet schedules and resolve technical challenges.
- Conducting quality checks, including inspection of completed welds, and addressing any discovered defects.
- Adhering to health and safety protocols to maintain a safe workspace.
- Updating production logs and records for completed tasks.
