Job Description

Overview

We are proud to be one of the UK’s fastest-growing civil engineering businesses, committed to delivering exceptional results while fostering an inclusive and supportive environment. At our core, we are a community built on ambition, integrity, and care for our people.

This is your chance to join a company that not only focuses professional growth but also values well-being and innovation. As a Principal Engineer, you'll be at the epicentre of exciting, complex projects that shape the future of civil engineering. You will lead with impact, apply your technical expertise, and help build a more sustainable future.

If you're seeking a role where your leadership and technical prowess can thrive, combined with clear progression opportunities and a culture of inclusion, we’d love to hear from you.

Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing technical leadership throughout preconstruction phases, from feasibility studies to tender submissions and final handovers.
  • Developing innovative engineering strategies, methodologies, and risk mitigation plans to ensure project success.
  • Leading buildability reviews, value engineering efforts, and risk assessments to enhance project outcomes.
  • Approving both temporary and permanent works in collaboration with subcontractors, designers, and suppliers.
  • Championing sustainability by driving low-carbon designs, materials efficiency and modern construction methods.
  • Translating client or project needs into bespoke technical services and presenting proposals.
  • Acting as Principal Designer in compliance with CDM Regulations, where needed.
  • Mentoring, coaching, and developing junior engineers to build technical capabilities across the team.
  • Representing the organisation at key meetings, design reviews, client presentations, and industry events.
  • Embedding lessons from completed projects into preconstruction processes to fuel continuous improvement.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Degree or HNC/HND in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field (or equivalent).
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working towards accreditation with ICE, IStructE, or an equivalent body.
  • Strong technical expertise in engineering practices, construction techniques, and industry standards.
  • Proficiency in design software like AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit, or alternatives.
  • Demonstrated experience in CDM compliance, risk management, and technical assurance processes such as design and buildability reviews.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to distill complex technical concepts into actionable guidance.
  • History of successfully leading diverse multidisciplinary teams.
  • Proven experience with both client engagement and stakeholder collaboration.

Day-to-Day

Your typical workday will involve a dynamic balance of leadership, stakeholder collaboration, and technical expertise:

  1. Morning Planning & Coordination:

    • Leading project reviews to ensure alignment and progress on engineering designs.
    • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and responding to client updates or challenges.
  2. Technical Reviews & Documentation:

    • Conducting buildability assessments, identifying risks, and proposing sustainable design solutions.
    • Reviewing or revising technical drawings, plans, and CAD models.
  3. Collaboration:

    • Facilitating workshops with designers, subcontractors, and suppliers to assess engineering feasibility.
    • Meeting with stakeholders to address concerns, share insights, or align on project objectives.
  4. Mentorship & Team Development:

    • Coaching junior engineers, reviewing their project contributions, and promoting their professional development.
  5. Representational Duties:

    • Attending client presentations, contributing to design discussions, and staying informed on latest industry practices by representing the organisation at key events.
