Job Description: Site Manager - Civil Engineering

Responsibilities

As a Site Manager, your key responsibilities will include:

• Providing leadership and management oversight to site teams and subcontractors.
• Owning and overseeing a package of works that includes concrete and demolition activities.
• Effectively planning, programming, and resourcing work to meet project schedules.
• Maintaining and promoting a proactive health and safety culture across all site operations.
• Ensuring compliance with approved Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS), specifications, and company procedures.
• Coordinating labour, materials, plant, and subcontractors to maximize site productivity.
• Monitoring daily and ongoing project progress, addressing any issues promptly to ensure timely delivery.
• Leading and motivating the workforce to achieve project goals in a collaborative and effective manner.
• Managing temporary works, ensuring compliance with relevant safety and structural controls.
• Communicating effectively with project managers, engineers, clients, stakeholders, and site-based personnel.
• Maintaining high standards of quality throughout project delivery.
• Ensuring the accurate and timely completion of required site documentation, records, and inspections.
• Proactively managing underground services and compliance with HSG47 legislation.
• Promoting safe use of plant, tools, and lifting operations.
• Identifying risks and implementing efficient mitigation measures.

Qualifications

To excel in this role, prospective candidates should meet the following requirements:

• Proven experience in managing civil engineering projects, particularly focusing on concrete works and demolition.
• Strong leadership skills with a demonstrated ability to lead and inspire site teams.
• Proven experience managing health and safety compliance in a civil engineering/construction environment.
• Proficiency in planning and organizing project resources efficiently.
• Experience in managing direct delivery workforces and coordinating subcontractor activities.
• Relevant certifications and qualifications including:
  • CSCS Card (appropriate to the role).
  • SMSTS Qualification.
  • Temporary Works Supervisor or Coordinator Certification.
  • Crane Appointed Person Qualification.
  • First Aid Training Certification.
• Knowledge of HSG47 – Avoiding Danger from Underground Services.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills to foster collaboration across diverse teams.
• Problem-solving and decision-making skills to address on-site challenges effectively.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

A typical day as a Site Manager will involve:

• Leading and managing site teams, ensuring they meet daily objectives and deadlines.
• Conducting daily toolbox talks and coordinating site workforce activities.
• Monitoring safety compliance and conducting regular site inspections.
• Liaising with project management, engineers, and subcontractors to discuss goals, risks, and project progress.
• Reviewing schedules and ensuring labour, plant, and materials are in place to avoid delays.
• Maintaining and updating all site documents, including safety reports and inspection records.
• Resolving technical or logistical challenges that arise during project delivery.
• Collaborating with other teams to identify opportunities for innovation and improvement.
• Actively promoting an inclusive work culture, ensuring all employees and subcontractors feel valued and respected.
