Overview

Our client, a well-established engineering company specialising in bespoke steelwork and heavy industrial projects, is seeking a skilled and experienced Freelance Design Draughtsperson to join their design team on a temporary contract. This role is based at their office in Cheddar, Somerset.

This opportunity has arisen due to an increased project workload and presents an exciting opening for a draughtsperson who thrives in a fast-paced engineering environment. The ideal candidate will contribute to delivering multiple live projects, working on a variety of bespoke and challenging assignments.


Responsibilities

As part of the design team, you will play a fundamental role in the production of high-quality technical drawings and provide robust technical support throughout the design and manufacturing stages. Key responsibilities include:

  • Producing accurate and detailed General Assembly (GA) and fabrication drawings using AutoCAD and Autodesk Inventor.
  • Preparing desktop site layouts, site plans, and electrical schematic templates, if required.
  • Assisting with onsite surveys to record accurate measurements for project execution.
  • Maintaining drawing registers, ensuring proper document control and full file integrity.
  • Developing and updating electronic and hard-copy drawing template libraries.
  • Restoring and updating existing technical drawings for relevance and accuracy.
  • Collaborating with Project Managers, engineers, and the wider team to resolve technical queries efficiently.
  • Ensuring all project drawings meet company Quality Assurance (QA) standards.
  • Supporting the lifecycle of engineering projects by providing technical documentation and addressing ongoing design needs.
  • Managing your workload efficiently while meeting strict project deadlines with consistent attention to detail.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you should meet the following qualifications and have relevant industry experience:

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Proven experience in a similar role such as Design Draughtsperson, CAD Technician, or Design Draughtsman.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Autodesk Inventor (2D and 3D modelling).
  • Skilled in producing General Assembly drawings and fabrication designs.
  • Familiarity with structural steelwork, heavy engineering, or fabrication projects.
  • Strong ability to interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organisational abilities, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently while communicating effectively within a team-oriented environment.
  • Experience working in fast-paced engineering or manufacturing settings.

Desirable Skills and Experience:

  • Industry experience in steelwork or heavy industrial projects.
  • Previous experience conducting site surveys and recording accurate measurements.
  • Knowledge of quality assurance (QA) processes and document control systems.
  • Experience with electrical schematic drawings or related tasks.

Day-to-Day

On a day-to-day basis, you will:

  • Work collaboratively with the design and contracts teams to deliver detailed CAD drawings.
  • Attend to technical drawing updates, including changes driven by client feedback or site conditions.
  • Conduct design reviews to verify accuracy and alignment with client and company specifications.
  • Organise project files, maintain drawing registers, and adhere to internal QA processes.
  • Ensure designs comply with manufacturing requirements and quality expectations.
  • Interact with engineers and contractors to resolve any technical or design-related challenges.
  • Monitor project deadlines and deliver assigned drawings efficiently and accurately.

Contract Details

  • Basis: Temporary freelance contract (with potential for extension, subject to project requirements).
  • Work Setup: Office-based role located in Cheddar, Somerset.
  • Start Date: Immediate availability is preferred.
  • Rate: Competitive day rate (dependent on experience).
